Expert Alexander Vodoviz, head of the Project Office of the Metinvest company, emphasized that the coal from this mine powers the largest metallurgical enterprises in the country, including "ArcelorMittal" and the Dnipro Metallurgical Plant.
"If the mine falls under enemy control or is destroyed, Ukraine will have to import coal by sea, which is extremely disadvantageous," he noted.
The mine is already facing immediate threats, with combat operations unfolding near one of its sites.
Pokrovsk is also a crucial transport hub, linking key routes necessary for the country's defense.
Even in the event of stabilization, restoring the destroyed infrastructure in eastern Ukraine will require enormous investments.
"We will remember the years 2023-2024 as relatively calm, as the destruction occurring now demands billions in investments," Vodoviz added.
The loss of the city would be a severe blow to Ukraine, complicating the operation of the metallurgy industry and the defense of the region.
