Volodymyr and Olena Zelensky gave their first interview for the telethon "United News" in the new year 2025. During the discussion, the President addressed several important questions
“Everyone talks about peace, but when we speak of a just peace – it means a strong Ukraine. It entails serious security guarantees, ensuring that Putin will not come back with aggression. This is very important. We have a historic chance because, I believe, for many years brave people fought for independence and did not give in. Today, we can achieve this,” – wrote the Head of State on Telegram.
When asked about the end of the war, Volodymyr Zelensky stated that it would not happen overnight.
“But the hot phase of the war can indeed end quite quickly if Trump is strong in his position, and it is preferable that this position aligns with European colleagues,” – said the President of Ukraine, as quoted by bbc.
In the interview, Volodymyr Zelensky also responded to a question about whether elections would take place in Ukraine soon after the hot phase of the war ends.
“In 2025, if it is successful, and we can achieve the end of the hot phase of the war with a strong position for Ukraine, we will have a strong army, a robust package of weapons, and guarantees. After that, in principle, we can consider not having a state of war in Ukraine, and then after that… (elections may be possible, – ed.),” – said the Head of State.
According to the President of Ukraine, the decision on whether he will run for a second term depends on how the war concludes.
“For me, this is not the focus of today. This is not today’s goal. I do not know how this war will end. If I accomplish more than I can – then I will look at it more positively,” – said Volodymyr Zelensky.
Journalists also asked the President of Ukraine to share his impressions of Donald Trump.
“Trump could be decisive. For us, that is the most important thing,” – responded Volodymyr Zelensky. – “He can truly stop Putin, or more accurately, help us stop Putin. He can do it. He is strong and unpredictable. I would like Trump’s unpredictability to primarily concern Russia. I believe he genuinely wants to end the war. I think Putin fears him, which is why he takes steps to ensure some voices from the Kremlin reach the U.S. administration.”
