Today, January 28, marks the International Data Protection Day, the Day of the State Flag of Ukraine, and the World Unemployment Day, reports UNN.
On January 28, 1992, the Verkhovna Rada adopted the Resolution "On the Approval of the National Flag of Ukraine as the State Flag." This document officially confirmed the rectangular banner consisting of two equal-width horizontal stripes: the upper one in blue and the lower one in yellow. A symbol of the state. A symbol of struggle and victory! It will undoubtedly fly over all territories liberated from the enemy.
The establishment of the blue and yellow combination as the national colors of Ukraine occurred during the European "Spring of Nations." This flag was first raised in June 1848 at the city hall of Lviv. Since then, banners in national colors have been used during Shevchenko celebrations and other festivities in Galicia, Bukovina, and Transcarpathia.
Today also commemorates the International Data Protection Day. This event was initiated in 2007 by the Council of Europe.
At the roots of the concept of personal data protection and privacy stood American lawyer Louis Brandeis, who served as a Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court from 1916 to 1939.
At that time, the so-called "tabloid press" was quite popular in the U.S., which did not hesitate to publish all personal information about the subjects of its articles.
Brandeis proposed establishing a "right to be left alone" for individuals.
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948 proclaimed each person's right to protection against intrusions into their private life, home, or correspondence. Since then, many international agreements have referenced privacy as a natural human right.
On January 28, 1981, the Council of Europe adopted the Convention "On the Protection of Individuals with regard to Automatic Processing of Personal Data." This document became the first international instrument that precisely defined what personal data is. It also outlines mechanisms for protecting the right to privacy.
Moreover, January 28 is also the World Unemployment Day.
The purpose of this event is to draw the attention of the public and governments to unemployment, which leaves millions of people in various countries without means of livelihood.
In 2023, it was reported that according to official statistics, there are currently over 200 billion unemployed individuals worldwide.
The State Employment Center reported that in Ukraine, 100,000 people are classified as unemployed.
Additionally, today we can also celebrate Antarctica Day, Lego Constructor Day, and join events for World Leprosy Day.
According to the church calendar, today is the Feast Day of St. Ephrem the Syrian, who lived in Mesopotamia in the 4th century.
Once, Ephrem was accused of theft but was acquitted in court. After that, he secluded himself in the desert. He had no involvement in the crime but still felt remorse, which is why Ephrem is known as the teacher of repentance.
Following this, Ephrem became a monk in a monastery in Syria. He wrote many prayers and hymns.
Those celebrating their name day on January 28 include Ephrem, Efim, Georgiy, and Yuriy.
