According to a decision by the Ministry of Culture and Strategic Communications of Ukraine, 15 cultural heritage sites in Poltava will be removed from the State Register of Immovable Monuments of Ukraine. The corresponding order was signed on January 31, 2025. This information was reported by Suspilne, referencing its own sources, as noted by UNN.
Details
It is reported that the monuments in question are related to the events of the Battle of Poltava and the Russian imperial history of the city. Among them are the monument to Peter I at the Swedish Grave, the location of the Tsar's command post, and 10 redoubts on the battlefield of Poltava, as well as the monument marking Peter I's resting place after the Battle of Poltava, along with the monument to the defenders of the Poltava fortress and its commander, Alexey Kelin.
The decision to exclude these monuments from the State Register was made based on the expert conclusion of the Ministry of Culture, recommendations from the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory, and a proposal from the Poltava Regional Military Administration.
It is emphasized that this decision is motivated by the need to decolonize urban space and condemn Russian imperial policies in Ukraine.
As a result, the authorities in Poltava will now have the right to decide on the dismantling of these sites.
It should be noted
57 cultural heritage sites from the Transcarpathian region have been added to the State Register of Immovable Monuments of Ukraine. The register now includes a total of 163 monuments of local and national significance in the region.
