The maroon chevron distinguishes the Air Assault Forces. It serves as the primary background color and is featured in the insignia of the 80th Separate Air Assault Galician Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Telegraph continues to introduce readers to the chevrons of the combat units of the Ukrainian army. This symbol incorporates several elements.

The silver rampant lion represents Lviv as the region of the brigade's permanent deployment. The lion's wings symbolize its affiliation with the Air Assault Forces. The four-legged creature holds a flaming sword, which is the symbol of Archangel Michael, the patron of the Air Assault Forces.

History of the Brigade

The 80th Separate Air Assault Brigade is stationed in Lviv. The unit was established in March 1955 as the 80th Parachute Landing Regiment. Initially, it was based in the town of Gaidzhunai (Lithuania). The unit was relocated to Khyriv in Lviv Oblast on December 19, 1979.

In the 1990s, the unit initially operated as a training center before being reorganized into a brigade. During this period, brigade soldiers participated in UN peacekeeping missions and international exercises.

In the spring of 2014, the unit was one of the first to defend Ukraine against Russian aggression. Brigade soldiers fought in the battles for Sloviansk and later moved to the Luhansk region. One of the brigade's most notable feats was the heroic defense of Luhansk airport, which lasted nearly five months. The warriors also participated in the battles for Donetsk airport, where the 3rd battalion particularly distinguished itself.

In 2016, the brigade was reformed into an air assault unit and acquired a tank unit. During the full-scale invasion, they distinguished themselves in the battles in Kherson, Kharkiv, and Kyiv regions.

Previously, "Telegraph" reported on another Lviv unit, which features not only a lion on its chevron but also a symbol from 1000 km away. The 45th Artillery Brigade was baptized in battle in Zaporizhzhia and recorded this on its insignia.
