American singer Selena Gomez has found herself in a controversy following a video in which she expressed sympathy for immigrants affected by the deportation raids of the Donald Trump administration. A former Republican Senate candidate called for the artist's deportation, to which she responded ironically.
This is reported by The Guardian, as noted by UNN.
Details
According to the media, in response to a comment from the former Senate candidate stating that she should be "deported" because of her video, Gomez wrote on social media: "Thanks for the laugh."
However, the singer deleted the video amid a surge of social media activity, partially incited by conservatives advocating for the deportation raids that the Trump administration conducted at the beginning of his second presidency, which began on January 20.
Additional Information
In the video in question, 32-year-old Gomez wipes away tears and says: "I just wanted to say that I am so sorry. My people are being attacked, children. I don’t understand. I wish I could do something, but I can’t. I will try everything. I promise."
The Trump administration responded to Gomez's statement. In an interview with Fox News regarding the video, Trump's "border czar" Tom Homan referred to the administration's unfounded claim that immigration raids were aimed solely at individuals with criminal backgrounds who entered the U.S. without permission.
"We will conduct this operation without apology."
Additionally, former Republican Senate candidate from Utah, Sam Parker, posted on social media accusing Gomez of having a "dependency attitude," which he stated warranted her deportation from the country she has been a citizen of her whole life.
In one of his posts, Parker insulted Gomez by calling her a "descendant of Mexican illegals," adding: "Maybe Selena should be deported too?"
In a second post, Parker stated: "Deport Selena Gomez," after which he proceeded to mock the artist, her fans who came to her defense, and the media covering his tirade.
It is worth noting that the White House reported the arrest of 538 illegal immigrants, including a suspected terrorist. Among those detained were members of the Tren de Aragua gang and individuals convicted of crimes against minors.
