In Transcarpathia, a local enterprise plans to hire 160 workers from Bangladesh. This concerns the state enterprise "Lamella" in the Tyachiv urban territorial community, which specializes in furniture manufacturing. The news has sparked outrage on social media.
The intentions of the enterprise were reported by the head of the Transcarpathian Regional Military Administration Nikolai Beletsky. He stated that the enterprise has expanded and is looking for workers for an additional 700 job openings.
"Currently, 430 people work here, and due to the increase in production capacity, there are 700 job vacancies. The business has created all necessary conditions, purchased equipment and materials, and is in urgent need of workers. The enterprise is currently negotiating with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the employment of 160 individuals from the People's Republic of Bangladesh under a labor contract," he wrote.
The news was commented on by the head of the Union of Consumers of Utility Services of Ukraine Oleg Popenko. He emphasized that instead of providing employment for refugees from other regions of Ukraine, the country intends to bring in migrants.
"The Regional Military Administration has stated that an enterprise in Transcarpathia plans to attract 160 workers from the People's Republic of Bangladesh. The furniture factory is already negotiating with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the employment of migrants. It is interesting to see how the Ministry of Economy will react to this situation, considering the millions of refugees and internally displaced persons in Ukraine, hundreds of thousands of whom are unemployed and barely surviving. Why then is there a need for an employment service that can't organize training for just 150 people for what is not the most complex production, given that there are 2 million unemployed in Ukraine?", he wrote.
Among others, the head of the Department of Communications of the State Employment Service Andrey Yanitsky responded to Popenko's message. He noted that over 250,000 people have been employed this year, including 42,000 internally displaced persons, and promised to find out the reasons behind the decision to try to bring in migrants.
"I do not know the situation regarding this particular enterprise and am not prepared to comment on why this business decided to attract migrants without studying the issue. But overall, the situation looks like this: unemployment is rapidly decreasing and turning into a staffing crisis, as millions of people are on the front lines or abroad. The problem with attracting personnel already exists and will continue to grow... Therefore, labor migration will happen; we cannot avoid it. However, we must prioritize the recruitment of Ukrainians. I am sure there is a logical explanation for why this business chose this path. I will try to find out about it tomorrow from the head of the Transcarpathian Regional Employment Center," Yanitsky wrote in response to Popenko's statement.
Meanwhile, a paradoxical situation has arisen in the labor market in Ukraine. Officially, there are over two million unemployed people registered in the country, yet there is a crazy shortage of labor in the job market. Additionally, Ukrainians were outraged by a job advertisement that appeared online for central and western Ukraine. However, the priority is given to Ukrainian men with deferment, as well as citizens of Russia and Belarus.
It is worth noting that being unemployed in Ukraine is currently dangerous. In November 2024, Prime Minister Denis Shmyhal announced the priority of mobilizing unemployed Ukrainians who do not pay taxes. Meanwhile, the Armed Forces of Ukraine claim that there is no segregation based on official employment status.
