Today, February 20, Ukraine commemorates the Day of Remembrance for the Heroes of the Heavenly Hundred. It has been 11 years since the security forces of the Yanukovych regime opened fire on the protesters of Euromaidan. Over 100 people lost their lives in the center of Kyiv during that time.
In November 2013, thousands of Ukrainians gathered on Maidan. This was a protest against then-President Viktor Yanukovych's refusal to pursue European integration. Consequently, the people demanded the resignation of the controversial leader.
The protests lasted for three months. The "Berkut" fighters, under Yanukovych's orders, began to violently disperse the peaceful demonstrators. This led to the first casualties – Serhiy Nihoyan, Mykhailo Zhiznevsky, and Yuriy Verbytsky. From February 18-20, the "Berkut" forces started to kill Maidan activists en masse. The security forces shot at the protesters on the streets of central Kyiv. During this period, more than a hundred people were killed, who were symbolically referred to as the "Heavenly Hundred."
In 2015, the fifth president of Ukraine, Petro Poroshenko, declared February 20 as the Day of Remembrance for the Heroes of the Heavenly Hundred. On this day, we remember those who gave their lives for the freedom of the state and European values. "Telegraph" has prepared a symbolic collection of images for this day. Send them to your loved ones and remind them of the significant events in our history.
