Historian, publicist, and professor at the Ukrainian Catholic University, Yaroslav Hrytsak, stated that if a ceasefire occurs in Ukraine, a new political elite will come to power. There is a chance that these individuals will possess more experience in governance and military leadership.
Hrytsak shared these thoughts in an interview with "Telegraph" — "There will be a ceasefire, but it carries a new risk: about Trump's victory, Putin's mistakes, and Zaluzhny's future". He was asked whether there has been a time in Ukrainian history when the country had a president previously unconnected to governance, along with a similar Verkhovna Rada, and how such situations ended.
"I would say we are talking about a potential collapse that may occur. I do not know how much resilience Ukraine has left. I believe it is quite significant. A few weeks ago, a survey revealed the lines of division in Ukrainian society, showing that these divisions have been greatly exaggerated. The only thing I understand is that if there is a ceasefire, there will be elections," — he said.
According to him, if elections take place, it is likely that those in power will not be able to hold on. Hrytsak added that a different project or political elite should come to power.
"Will these be the 'old' elites, projects from Poroshenko and Tymoshenko? I doubt it. I suspect that something similar to 2019 might happen, where someone completely unexpected emerges and quickly forms a party. There will be a change, and there may be a chance that someone will have more experience in governance and military command," — the historian believes.
In response to a question about the possibility of a military party, he stated that it is not necessary, but there will be military personnel involved.
"A government of national trust or a pragmatic government, primarily consisting of military leaders. Don’t take this as propaganda... Or maybe do take it that way — it doesn’t matter, but what Zaluzhny (the former commander of the Armed Forces of Ukraine — ed.) is saying now makes a lot of sense to me," — the professor adds.
He sees Zaluzhny as a new leader and strategist. However, whether he will manage to create a project, whether he desires to do so, or whether the power will allow him to is a significant question mark. The historian concluded that this remains an open question for us.
Earlier, "Telegraph" reported that Donald Trump, who became the winner of the presidential elections in the USA on November 5, called Russian President Vladimir Putin. The main topic of their conversation was the war in Ukraine.
